Dr. Malcolm Coulthard - Save Every Child's Life

By Surrey News Group, UK (Originally in English) 2008.12.17

Little Millie Kelly suffered kidney failure after an operation. However, being a tiny baby of 6lb 2oz, she was unable to use the kidney dialysis machine at the Royal Victoria Infirmary Hospital. With persistence, Dr. Malcolm Coulthard, along with colleagues, designed and built an original scaled-down version of a kidney dialysis machine, which saved Millie’s life. Millie’s mother, Rebecca Kelly, said, “If it was not for that machine, then she wouldn’t be here today. Now she is as fit as a fiddle, just like a normal two-year-old. Words cannot describe how grateful my family is to Dr. Coulthard. Not only is he a great consultant, but now a great friend and inspiration to Millie, my family and me.”

On December 17, Golden Year 5 (2008), on behalf of Supreme Master Ching Hai, our Association members went to Newcastle upon Tyne in the North of England and presented the Shining World Hero Award to pediatrician Dr. Coulthard, who has served in the hospital for 23 years. Also present at the ceremony were nurse Jean Croiser, who played a big part in Millie’s recovery, and Design Engineer Michael Whittacker, who is now working on the new updated version of the machine. Upon receiving the Award, Dr. Coulthard said, “I am accepting this on behalf, not only of myself and Jean, but all the other nurses and doctors and engineers that have put a huge amount into this and made it possible. So, thank you.”

Along with the beautiful Crystal Award Plaque and Hero and Heroine T-shirts, our Association members also presented a US$3,000 (£1,890 Sterling) check from Master for the Children’s Kidney Ward, which will “go towards development of the existing pilot machine into a final version,” according to Dr. Coulthard. In addition, a selection of Master’s publications was given to the hospital to be shared with all the children.

Thank you, Dr. Coulthard and all the loving staff in the Children’s Kidney Ward at the hospital, for your hard work and dedication. May God’s grace be with you so that every child will be given a chance to live.
